In this article they post that Google has had many flops over the past couple of years and very few successes. Further, they list several industry experts who also feel that their core product – search – has declined in quality as well.
I have to say I largely agree with all of the points in this article. On the SEO side of the house we’ve seen the Google index get updated more slowly than usual, and rankings can take much longer to update. PR, the largely overrated measure of a web site’s strength, also hasn’t been updated in quite some time.
What’s going on? Your guess is as good as mine. Just remember that it’s always good to have your eggs in more than one basket. This is not just with adwords and natural search, but also with offline advertising, face to face sales efforts, and other methods of getting the word out.
In the mean time, Google is still the only game in town. They just need to watch out because they could go the way of Alta Vista and Hotbot before it.
